Purse notebook 11/?/16

I will share selections from my purse notebooks on this blog until I decide against it.

SCROLL – DONG QICHANG “WINTER LANDSCAPE IN THE STYLE OF LI CHEN AND CALLIGRAPHY” Ming, Wanti reign, 1613

I am not looking at it now – sitting down round the corner to write. Sugarloaf cuts on side of hill, white; unsmoothed sides furred. 1st time I saw reminded me strongly of Topanga. Bare distinct trees foreground. Envelope-edged hill silhouettes in back.

Excellence of mist almost undermines pic but does not – almost too good but somehow still w/ its face toward thing it looks at, articulate without preparation, a magnificent improvisational speaker. Fog rises from ground. Ground which sounds like softball.

Strong sense throughout – strong presence of detailed, fine, digital, fingered, gill-cut, gill-bladed sound in quiet – sound – the air in the low dry curled grasses, I see them, yellow as dogs’ teeth. The branches not leaning but their little tributes seem to rise & collect like feathers on sleeping, puffed bird – sounds of deer’s hooves.
